Crew Profile

Luxury charter yacht crew for CAMPAI
Captain: Ted Egan (48)

Capt. Ted grew up in chilly Chicago, on the blustery shores of Lake Michigan, but left for the sunny climes of South Florida for school. This was followed by 25 years in the heart of American viticulture, the Napa Valley. There, Ted was involved in making and marketing wine worldwide. Eventually fate lead Ted to the sailing capital of Newport, and he has since pursued his love of yachting and the water. The BVI fell onto Ted's navigational chart 4 years ago and he has been providing a bespoke experience to his charter guests ever since. His intimate knowledge of the islands allows for a one of a kind island adventure.

Summer seasons will see Capt. Ted returning Campai to the waters of New England, while in the Winters Ted and Campai return to the sunny Caribbean.

Chef / Mate: Leslie Guye-Vuillème (26)

Leslie was born and raised in Switzerland. After her studies of applied linguistics in Zurich, she was employed as an interpreter in the region of Winterthur. An avid, sports-minded traveller, she used her summer holidays to improve her sailing skills. As her passion for sailing grew, she went to sea on a regular basis. Her skill and aptitude for languages enabled her to work on boats in several countries. Outgoing and enthusiastic, she easily interacted with people wherever she went, welcoming people in their mother tongue. A few years ago, Leslie arrived in the Caribbean, where she worked as a chef, primarily for families on weekly charters. Her passion for cooking was inspired by the culinary skills of her grandmother, who prepared delicious meals for memorable family dinners.

Leslie takes great pleasure in preparing tasty food to put on the table for people to share and enjoy.

Three spacious, en suite, air conditioned staterooms accommodate 6 guests. Hairdryer in each bath, all toilets are electric.

Well, youcould not have been more right about your recommendation of S/Y Campai, CaptainBarney (sorry, everyone loved his first name and so his last name was ‘lost atsea’), Chef Diane and Stewardess Sophie. We had the time of our lives from beginning to end.   From a flawless pickup and welcome in St.Thomas to our very busy five island tour, we were treated to the most wonderfulmeals, the kindest touches from creative, hand-folded different linens at everymeal, beautiful stateroom turn downs every day, chilled expedition waterbottles carefully placed in the cockpit and at the bedside every night  and all kinds of fun from tubing towakeboarding, snorkelling and kayaking. The touches and kindness of this crew are exceptional.  Barney is not only a great and fun captain, his cheeky humour and warm demeanour made him part of our family.   He made each of our four children laugh andvolunteer many times, “Captain Barney is hilarious and so nice and fun…we lovehim.” Among his many talents, he was a keen wheelman on the speed dingy wherehe gave A+ tube rides to three boys who could not wipe the grins off theirfaces.

Chef Diane issimply a lovely person and, in our estimation, an extremely talented chef.  She created the most beautiful meals andsurprises serving them with style and a keen focus on our family tastes all thoughtfullyprepared and beautifully presented.  Thegathering and feast at Campai’s dinning cockpit was a three-time-a-day luxurytreat that put our family of six near heaven and with smiles abound.  The meals were simply fantastic and presentedwith a  sweet spirit that always made youfeel extra special and privileged. Lovely Sophie would set a beautiful tablewith the most ornate folded linens and varied place settings that anyone coulddream up.   She also became an importantfixture at cocktail hour with her fantastic handmade drinks.  Captain Barney was also the best maître’dappearing precisely at the right times to offer more wine or drinks and somelight hearted commentary that made everyone laugh.   With his keen technology background andorganized way, family movie night was not only punctuated by an exceptionallyorganized movie library and presented on a nice big screen in her beautifulsalon with great surround sound, but Barney had great recommendations that werea hit with the family.   All of Campai’screw were quietly attentive and outright friendly and enthusiastic andinteresting to talk to as well.

We went onfun expeditions with Barney and a particularly touching and memorable ‘treasurehunt’ that somehow found a beautifully colored treasure map in a bottle on JostVan Dyke which led us to Norman Island (Treasure Island) where after an amazingsnorkel through caves, our 8 year old discovered the buried treasure box highabove the cave water wrapped in rope and linen. The adventure lasted through two days of anticipation and culminated ina Campai cigar box filled with Gummi Bears and Hershey’s Kisses that alsomagically never were exhausted (on account of ‘evening angels’ who magicallysaw to it that the box was filled to the brim as soon as it was depleted).   You should have seen the face on 8 year oldConrad who scratched his head as he told Captain Barney about how he ‘had eatenso much candy’ that he could see the bottom of the box but somehow each day itwas filled to the brim again).  This wasa priceless memory to say the least and executed flawlessly with noprompting.  It was the happy, thoughtfuland creative initiative of a great crew.

As anexperienced yachtsman, I can honestly S/Y Campai is a great yacht and herquality build and design by renowned naval architect Ron Holland wasapparent.   She cuts a striking line onthe water, is a high volume yacht but fairly speedy cruiser and very soundunder full sail.  She has a very nice searide that was especially appreciated by an 8 year old known for gettingseasick.  She has been well maintainedand what shows of her age disappears quickly underway and the longer you spendtime on her.   But above all, it’s thecrew that makes the difference.   My wifeand I said many times that we were splendidly happy with our choice of thiscrew first and the yacht second and each of our four children would second thatsentiment.

In the end,the true test of a recommendation is whether one would charter again with thiscrew or on this yacht.  The answer is anemphatic, “YES!”  We would go out of ourway to be with Barney, Diane and Sophie again and can unreservedly recommendthem and S/Y Campai to your clients.  Wewould follow this crew to almost any yacht.  Please feel free to post this recommendation on your website.  Barney, Diane and Sophie have earned it andS/Y Campai deserves it.

All the bestat the end of a family dream trip. – Family Patriarch
